COCO DOODLES

coco96

Oh I”ve been plotting this one for a while now and I finally brought myself to do it. Countless poster quotes, books, movies, illustrations and products have been made about one of the most important characters in the history of fashion, the designer, the innovator, the icon, Coco Chanel. Her 2.55 is the most coveted accessory in the world, not the Birkin. Her perfume is the classic of classics. Her tweed jackets have been copied, reinvented and revamped by almost every fashion house and retailer. Coco Chanel is perhaps the most elegant, interesting and delightful cliche there is and of course, I had to doodle her and her world. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed preparing it!

“A girl should be two things: who and what she wants”.

SHALLOW SOPH: The Cat Lady

catlady96CAT LADY, a scary term for most women but not for Sophie.

Who said a cat lady had to be a single old woman living with numerous furry friends?

Who said a cat lady has to love the real, hairy fellas and not a kitty printed cushion (or a Miss Sicily animalier bag, or a pastel pink leopard tea dress, or a big cat coffee mug, or Grace Coddington’s Catwalk Cats, or a pair of pointy, calf hair, animal print pumps, or Eugenia Kim’s pink kitten ears hat or that Spring’14 Miu Miu coat Sophie has been eying with passion).

Her name is Sophie and she is a cat lady (printed cats only, she is more of a dog person).

United States of Sophie: THE SHOWGIRL

showgirlCreativity works in mysterious ways. Sometimes when you need her the most (and I call it a her because I can actually imagine a little she demon working the magic inside my head), she is just nowhere to be found. And then, when you least expect it, while drawing something simple, it hits you like punch (a good one, that is). That’s exactly what happened with this little Vegas creature, she was supposed to be part of a trend report and she ended up getting her own post and inspiring me to create whole new section: The United States of Sophie

You have already met Shallow Soph, Sophie, the Dreamer and even Sophie, the doodle. Now it’s time for you to meet another side of this colorful character, the Sophie that likes to play dress-up:

“Her name was Sophie, she was a showgirl”.

Have a great day,

The Coat Check, A/W 2013

rochascoat96I have been fantasizing about that pink, wool-blend Rochas number for a while now. Planning this season’s coat edit, I already knew I wanted it to be the star of the cover and I made it happen (if only I could make that damn coat magically appear inside my closet) . If you have been reading me for a while now, you have probably noticed I have been making some changes when it comes to the content of this blog. I am now mainly focusing on trends, illustration and runway. After our Fashion Week coverage (it took me ages and I know, I still owe you the finest from Paris but I need some detox), it’s time to go back to this season’s trends and styles.

There was a time when one coats or two was all we needed, nowadays, they are never enough. Yes, everybody needs to have the two classics: camel and black. But why stick to the basics when you can have prints, pink, red and more? I have selected twelve trend coats for this Winter. You probably have seen them around so now it’s your turn to buy them!

PFW SPRING 2014: The Trend Report

pfwtrends

PFW ended three weeks ago and my coverage is still incomplete. With all the illustration and changes I’ve been doing to the blog, I considered leaving the Paris part of the fashion month out. But come on, Paris? With that line-up? The big finale? I just couldn’t ignore it and so here it is, better late than ever, my PFW trend report. This season was a game changer for me when it comes to the French fashion capital, I just wasn’t expecting what we saw. From Marc Jacobs and his final bow at Vuitton and Valentino’s ethnic romance to Balmain’s icing shades, it was all so very different and unique. Here they are, my top trends from the Paris shows.

SHALLOW SOPH: Everyone comes with baggage…

baggage96

For those of you who haven’t met Sophie, let me introduce her to you. She’s a more irreverent, cynical, shallow and blatant paper version of me. You’ve seen her before, all dressed in pink and flowers, lace and pastels, with her pretty lips and her perfect hair. But don’t get fooled by that sweet and sugary packaging, the inside is more complex and raw than it could possibly be (hence the name of the blog). That’s why I wanted to devote a section to one of the many sides of Sophie, the shallow one. How it works? I take a beautiful and inspirational quote and let Sophie twist it and turn into her own trivial masterpiece, a frivolous but always stylish statement. Materialistic and almost profane? Yes, that’s what makes it fun (Shallow Soph takes over the keyboard sometimes).

“Everyone comes with baggage. Find someone who loves you enough to help you unpack”.

or

“Everyone comes with baggage. Find someone who loves you enough to build you a big-ass walk-in closet”.

I’d rather have the closet! Who needs help unpacking when you can organize, fold and store all your belongings inside those shiny and new drawers?

From Shallow Soph, with love…

NY’s FINEST SPRING 2014, part 2

nyfinest2

Yeah, I know what some of you are thinking. You might be thinking that this is not a race, that everyone’s a winner. Well, that doesn’t really happen when it comes to fashion. When it comes to Fashion Week, some finish last, some finish first. That’s why every season I like to choose my top 10. Yesterday we started our countdown, the spots from 10 – 6 have already been filled. Now it’s time to reach the top of this little chart of mine, the five best shows (in my opinion) from what was a fabulous Fashion Week in New York. Are you ready to discover my picks? Keep on reading!

proenza

Lázaro Hernandez and Jack McCoullough can do no wrong. Their collections always rank really high, their shows have always so much buzz around them and there are many reasons why that keeps happening. But the main one, their clothes are always exquisite. For Spring 2014, with a neutral color palette and some hints of shimmer, they presented a collection packed with beautiful tailoring and craftsmanship. And no we are not talking hand-embroidery or embellishments, we are talking construction. From coats to evening dresses, it was all so effortless and chic at the same time!

jasonwu

Jason Wu had been following a patter until now, that chic goes bondage theme was a regular in his runway shows. For Spring 2014, he went all soft and glam on us. And guess what? We kind of love it! The color palette was all about powdery shades and pastels (touch of navy and black here and there). The shimmery fabrics played the most important role of the collection, paired up against slouchy coats and loose midi skirts. The slip was everywhere, from those sultry sparkly numbers to sheer, crisp white ones. It was different drom what we’ve always seen from him, but it still had Jason Wu written all over.

MKors

Oh boy, this was a beautiful surprise and a beautiful collection! The most important thing, it was so wearable and so likeable and it had that retro feel that everybody loves. The structured garments (blazers and trench coats) worked perfectly with those leaf-printed, breezy dresses. And while the color palette was a little bit on the earthy side (I’m not that fond of that range), I couldn’t care less, I fell in love. The highlights? The pin-up bikini, the short suits and short combos, that dress with the thigh-high slit and plunging neckline (it would’ve been too much, but it somehow worked) and the platforms (simple platforms, but platforms ever girl needs inside her closet).

jmendel

I’m always drawn to peachy colors and meticulous garments and that’s exactly what J.Mendel gave me for their Spring 2014 collection. Ever since that all-white Winter collection, I’ve been keeping an eye on this brand and I’m not disappointed at all. This collection was all about the short, short hem (thank God someone out there is still thinking about legs, with all the midi and 3/4 skirts we have been seeing) the pastels and the details (even the simplest of dresses had a little special something). We got to see short combos, skirt combos, pleated and ruffled hems, embellishments and beautiful prints and shoes. Those shoes, those shoes were even better than Sophia Webster’s range for J. Crew. Those shoes were even better than Delpozo’s bow sandals. I have to get me some J. Mendel heels next Spring, I really have to.

altuzarra

And last but definitely not least, the top of the list. With an effortlessly sexy collection, one of my favorite NYFW designers, Mr. Joseph Altuzarra. The slits on his skirts went as high as a slit can get. The layering and the styling was spot on. The collection was all about separates coming together and variations. He understands that there has to be something for everyone in a collection. While some of his sexy skirts were paired up with silk button downs, tank tops and long sleeve t-shirts were also an option. The highlight? The metallic fabric he used on some of the skirts and lightweight jackets. He gets the first place not only because it was all so wearable, but because it was original and beyond desirable!

That’s a wrap! We are moving on to LFW Trends and best shows. Are you ready for more Spring 2014? Don’t worry, I’m on it!

Sweet kisses…
