BIKINI SEASON 2013: The Garden Goddess

It’s July already, my sweet readers! Time sure flies by, so quickly I didn’t even see it coming. Today I have the 6th part of our Bikini Season 2013 special. And hoping you already have booked your little (or big) Summer getaway, I have a style that is a favorite of mine and will always be. Flowers are a basic when it comes to swimwear, but lately, the prints and patters have become so elaborate, so beautiful and so different from what we are used to seeing. Zimmermann, my favorite swimwear brand in the entire world, has a selection with a retro feel to it, the kind of flowers you could find on a vintage botanical print. We can also find florals so lively that you can almost smell them, those are perfect for the whole garden, picnic, day outside kind of look. I have put together our usual chart, this time it’s all about the garden trend. Are you ready for it?

Gingham: Nothing says picnic like gingham And while someone may make the stupid “did you borrow from an Olive Garden table?” joke, a gingham top, sundress or bikini are as cute as cute can get.

  • Lauren Dolige
  • NewLook
  • Topshop
  • Zimmermann

Vintage rose: I’m a sucker for floral prints, the kind of prints that are as real as a flower can get. Dolce & Gabbana has been doing them for so long, and when it comes to swimwear, Zimmermann is definitely the way to go.

  • Zimmermann
  • Ted Baker
  • Zimmermann
  • Zimmermann

Micro florals: The smaller the print, the cuter it looks. Think Band of Outsiders, think a less tacky version of Sookie Stackhouse tanning in the backyard.

  • New Look
  • Zimmermann
  • J.Crew
  • J.Crew

Fresh Greens: We are talking about the garden style, right? That’s why solid green bikinis are a must, you can mix and match them with a vintage floral print top or a wear the whole green thing with a flowery kaftan or silk robe.

  • J.Crew
  • Dolce & Gabbana
  • H&M
  • J.Crew

garden sel

Last but not least, the garment and accessory selection to complete The Garden Goddess style:

  1. Cropped top, Topshop
  2. Green sandals, ASOS
  3. Short-sleeve top, Dolce & Gabbana
  4. Floral bikini, Zimmermann
  5. Woven wedges, Dolce & Gabbana
  6. Vert, vert scent, Balmain
  7. Embroidered dress, Pull & Bear
  8. Texture shorts, Roxy
  9. Floral sunnies, ASOS
  10. Bucket bag, Ermanno Scervino
  11. Naughty Nautical nail polish, Essie
  12. Bikini top, H&M
  13. Bikini bottom, Ted Baker

Are you ready to pack your bags and leave this city? Are you ready for some sand and sun? I can’t wait to get out of here, I’ve got a tan to care of!

Sweet kisses…

Spring 2013 Trends: THE WALLFLOWER

the wallflower cover

Finally Friday, my sweet readers! This is the third part of our Spring 2013 Trend Report and so far, you seem to be liking this posts a lot (nothing makes me happier, really). Today I have a trend that’s always a regular on the Spring runways, it’s also a personal favorite: FLORAL PRINTS. My love for floral prints started a long time ago and like pastel colors, it will never grow old for me. Season after season, flowers always get reinvented by designers all over the world. We’ve seen the microfloral style, the textured one, the digital print version, the embroidered, the embellished (with flowers, possibilities are endless). For 2013, flowers look so lively one might even think they are real. But wait (not everything is digital print), there is another take on them and one that I personally prefer: the wallpaper prints.

Remember those Laura Ashley dresses? Well, that kind of print is kinda back! Botanical prints, retro floral paper, vintage flower compositions? You are going to find them everywhere! From Erdem’s meticulous patterns (pure poetry) and Thakoon’s flowery birdcages to Dries Van Noten’s ethereal grunge, flowers are all around and thank God for that! Hey, Spring is all about blooming.

  • Dries Van Noten / Peter Som / Thakoon
  • Erdem / Antonio Marras / Giambattista Valli

THE MUST-HAVE PIECES: A flowery sundress, I bet you have a bunch of those already! The silk, printed top, loose enough to look effortlessly chic when tucked inside a pair of trousers of shorts. A floral pencil skirt, workwear gone cute? Yes, please! Last but not least, the garden bikini (just beacuse they are lovely)!

  1. Blazer, Rag & Bone
  2. Shorts, Stella McCartney
  3. Cardigan, RED Valentino
  4. Swimsuit, Gucci
  5. Slippers, Oscar de la Renta
  6. Dress, Dolce & Gabbana
  7. Sunglasses, Irregular Choice
  8. Skirt, Stella McCartney
  9. T-shirt, Moschino
  10. Bag, Dolce & Gabbana
  11. Pumps, Charlotte Olympia

steal wallflower

  1. Shirt, Romwe
  2. Bikini, Zimmermann
  3. Top, Mango
  4. Scarf, Modcloth
  5. Flats, Corso Como
  6. Playsuit, Topshop
  7. Sunnies, Asos
  8. Sweatshirt, Romwe
  9. Necklace, Romwe
  10. Platforms, Jeffrey Campbell
  11. Pants, Topshop

That’s a wrap for today? Loving the garden flowers for Spring? Drop me a line or two, I’d love to hear what you think and what trends you’d like to see next.

Wishing you a lovely weekend,

Sweet kisses…

The Goodbye Summer/Hello Fall Mash-up: Flowers and lace

Afternoon, my sweet readers! August is almost over and so is my Summer, with the bf back in Italy and only two weeks left with my family, I’m starting to feel the nostalgia. God, time sure flies when you are having a good time. Anyway, back to what concerns us, fashion. As you probably know, we are in the middle of our season transition series, the Goodbye Summer / Hello Fall mash-up. Going from a season to another is much more fun (at least for me) than the start of a new one. Why? Because you get to play with the trends from both Spring and Fall, it’s the best of both worlds! Today I combined two trends that ooze romance and beauty, Spring’s vivid florals and Fall’s lovely lace. To me, the result of mixing them both is just a match made in heaven. And yes, to make things even more beautiful, I threw in a peplum (it was around for Spring and it’s even stronger for Fall). So without further ado, let’s start dissecting so we can later proceed to mash them both up.

  • THE TREND: Vivid Florals
  • Season: Spring 2012
  • As seen in: Preen, Erdem, Docle & Gabbana, Mary Katrantzou, Balmain (pictured)
  • Key wardrobe pieces: Nothing like a blooming dress and a chiffon blouse

Flowers are a constant in fashion but on Spring it was all about the real deal. No, not about making a bra out of real peonies but about the prints, prints so vivid and beautiful that they almost looked alive. And since we are not ready to give up this pretty trend, brace yourself for the Fall florals, the baroque ones (thank you Domenico and Stefano).

The selection: Sneakers, WET SEAL / Blouse, ROMWE / Dress, TED BAKER / Pants, TED BAKER / Boots, JEFFREY CAMPBELL / Bralet, TOPSHOP / Bag, DOLCE & GABBANA

  • THE TREND: Lovely lace
  • The season: Fall 2012
  • As seen in: Colette Dinnigan, Erdem (pictured), Lanvin
  • Key wardrobe pieces: the shorts, the jumper, the pencil skirt and the blouse

Lace is definitely one of my all-time favorite trends, I’m always happy to see it on the runway. I’m even more happy when I see retailers carrying a great variety of garments made with this ladylike and sexy fabric. This coming season won’t be the exception. One of the major trends we got to see on fashion week was the lace blouse with a different collar and the pencil skirt. J’adore!

The selection: Dress, TOPSHOP / Bodysuit, NORMA KAMALI / Blouse, FAITH CONNEXION / Shorts, ROMWE / Clutch, ASOS / Skirt, HAUTE HIPPIE / Shoes, CHARLOTTE OLYMPIA / Jumper, ISABEL MARANT

For me, playing around with textures and prints feels like I’m a kid and I just got a new toy. The key: never be afraid to try. You won’t know if you’ll like it until you wear it so start experimenting. I paired up a pair of vivid floral jeans with a blazer. To give it a twist, the hard lace top with the peplum and the pumps to add up some spice. What do you think? Oh, and about that Rebecca Minkoff carved satchel… It’s the ultimate dreamboat!

For all the details on today’s look, go to FASHIOLISTA

That’s a wrap for today! And remember, Fashion Week is just around the corner!

Sweet kisses…

Last day of May and you know what that means, right? Summer is finally hitting town! And while we get our gear ready to embrace the sun (and some color on our skin), I have for you my sixth piece for Chictopia’s blog, Everybody is Ugly. So far, being a Fashion News Editor for the site has been a great experience. Choosing my theme, preparing my illustrations and writing the article has become a weekly ritual for me (one that I really, really enjoy). But my week’s climax comes when it’s published, receiving all that positive feedback from you and welcoming new readers really makes me happy. For this week’s piece I wanted to do something that really represented my style and personality, of course I had to go with flowers and lace. In case you haven’t read it yet, here it is!

The Style Mash-Up: Three Ladylike Lace and Floral Print Outfits To Try

Fashion never ceases to amaze, it never stops changing, and it always manages to surprise. Long gone are the days when matching your belt to your purse and shoes is the golden rule and bold choices were always part of the “don’t” department. Nowadays, it’s all about fun and self-expression. It doesn’t matter if it’s dressy, messy or daring, as long as you can make it work. Trends are not to be followed in a text book kind of way and there are no step by step recipes for style. You take what you like, and you make it your own, which brings us to our main concept: The Mash-Up.

In music, a mash-up is the blend of one or more pre-recorded songs, in other words, a sound collage. Mash-ups have become really popular lately, hence the Rihanna and Adele composition overload that has taken over the Internet. And since fashion always keeps up with what’s current and never gets left behind, designers came up with the garment version of it. The fashion mash-up is all about mixing and matching different trends, textures, patterns, and prints.

Last September, the Spring 2012 runways were flooded with beautiful and complex ensembles (keeping the collage trend from Fall 2011 alive). Jonathan Saunders presented a collection in which colorful knits, paisley, graphic prints, and delicate appliqué swirls merged into pure fashion poetry. Signora Miuccia showcased her take on mash-ups in both Prada (crochet, cars, jewels and leather, need I say more) and Miu Miu (the A-line lace coats, the micro prints and the ornate cowboy boots still haunt my dreams) and last but not least, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana paired up to perfection their fresh produce prints to their always exquisite lace. They even threw in a pinch of crochet and jacquard.

Dressing up mash-up style is all about using our imagination to create a stylistic and beautiful chaos. Before trying out this trend, here are some tips to take into consideration:

The Garden Mash-up

1. Lose the fear, it’ll only make you match your purse to your shoes and your belt.
2. Have fun and don’t take it all too seriously. That’s the point of this game and you’ll get a better result.
3. It might not look good in your mind, but you’ll never know unless you try it on.
4. Detailed garments are mash-up material, bright solids are not (that’s color-blocking).
5. Mash-up is not a synonym for costume. Think feather skirt, not feather boa.
6. Use evening pieces to pump up day ones.
7. Use day pieces to down play evening ones.
8. When it comes to mash-ups, more is more. Layering, statement jewelry and metallic pieces can help you get the look.
9. Go for textured shoes to add another twist to your ensemble: mirror wedges, embellished pumps, woven sandals.
10. Mashed-up is not the same thing as messed-up. Yes Snooki, we’re talking to you.
11. Floral prints are a girl’s best friend, which brings us to the next argument…

The Pastel Mash-up

THE MASH-UP CHALLENGE: One style, two trends, three ways
THE STYLE: Ladylike
THE TRENDS: Lace and floral print

GARDEN MASH UP: If the party is in the garden, why not play the flower part?

Lace blazer, ZARA
Blush dress, TOPSHOP
Skinny belt, LIBERTY UK
Embellished sandals, ZARA
Chain purse, MICHAEL KORS
Cream Earrings, ASOS
Arty ring, YSL
Carry On nail polish, ESSIE

PASTEL MASH UP: Mixing in textures and prints but sticking with a soft color palette.

The Peplum Mash-up

Lace coat, ZARA
Polka dot shirt, RIVER ISLAND
Lampshade floral skirt, ASOS
Raffia wedges, LULU’s
Yellow shopper bag, ASOS
Sunglasses, CHLOE
Heart ring, WHISTLES
Cascade Cool nail polish, ESSIE

PEPLUM MASH-UP: Adding apeplum into this mix? It doesn’t get more ladylike than this!

Peplum top, RIVER ISLAND
Crochet shorts, RIVER ISLAND
Metallic belt, WAREHOUSE
Shiny wedges, ZARA
Flower bracelet, FOREVER 21
Pearl bracelet, RIVER ISLAND
Engraved bangle, RIVER ISLAND
Miami Nice nail polish, ESSIE

What’s your verdict? Are you gonna try the Ladylike Mash-up anytime soon? I sure hope so!

Sweet kisses…

Whether you like an A-line shape, a bodycon, a midi, a maxi or a skater (a personal favorite), you must have at least one inside your closet. You won’t be having a problem finding the one that suits you best, this season, floral skirts are to retailers, what bread is to a bakery. Here’s a selection of cute and flirty skirts that you can find online, they are just one click away!

TOP: Alice + Olivia / Dolce & Gabbana / Mary Katrantzou

Hello, hello my sweet readers! Spring is in full bloom, finally! No more rainy days, only warm and pretty sunny ones (here’s hoping). Today I have for you the fifth part of our Garden Goddess series, the series that just snagged Sweet’n’Raw a feature on the Fashiolista Facebook page. Today I have put together for you one of Sweet’n’Raw’s all time favorite looks (definitely on my top 5), it’s all about the dress. A floral dress is the most resourceful piece inside our Spring/Summer wardrobe, it’s effortlessly cute and pretty and it can be paired up with almost anything. Want to go to a music festival? Pair it with some biker boots or a crochet vest. Want a use it as a killer beach cover-up? Add some embellished sandals and a cute tote. Want to take it out for drinks? A blazer and some sky-high heels are the perfect complements. Here’s a selection of pretty and flowery dresses that you can find online.

BOTTOM: Dorothy Perkins / Dorothy Perkins / TOPSHOP

Cute, textured, mashed-up, dressed-up, you name it. This look has it all and we are so loving it! A combination of textures, shapes and prints is what makes it so special. What do you think?

  • A crewed interest nail polish, ESSIE

Good morning my sweet readers! Why not start the day with a fresh and floral post? The Garden Goddess series are back and better than ever. On a rainy day like this one, all we need is color. Today’s post is devoted to one of the season’s strongest trends: the flower printed pants. Versatile and resourceful, a pair of floral beauties are a must-have item in your closet. First of all, here’s an adorable selection of trousers you can find online.

TOP: Dolce & Gabbana / TOPSHOP / Dolce & Gabbana

BOTTOM: Current/Elliot / Dolce & Gabbana / River Island

Today’s look is all about cute and casual. Mixing floral pants with a peplum and some trainers would seem rather unusual, but when paired up together, they seem to fall right into place. I rarely use tennis shoes on my looks, let alone Converse, but I am really starting to dig them! What about you?

For all the details on today’s look, click HERE!

We are almost done with our Garden Goddess series and then it’s that time of the month, NAIL FILES time! Keep checking back if you want the low down on the season’s newest polish trends.

Sweet kisses…

Little Friday, my sweet readers! Ready for the weekend (hopefully, a weekend with no rain)? In case you want a fresh and pretty ensemble for a Saturday afternoon, I’m giving you the best from my flower garden (a rather fashionable and wearable garden). This is the second post from the Garden Goddess series, and judging by the response, you seem to be really enjoying this. Today’s garment is the jacket. A floral jacket is a key piece inside your closet: you can dress it down with some cut-offs and a tank, dress it up for a night out with a sequin or metallic mash-up, or simply wear it with a pair of trousers or some tailored shorts for a smart look. Your closet, your choice, I’m just a hopeful inspirator. Here’s a selection of jackets you can find online, for every pocket there’s an alternative.

TOP: Ted Baker / River Island / River Island

MIDDLE: Dolce & Gabbana / Elizabeth & James / Mary Katrantzou

BOTTOM: Dolce & Gabbana / Manoush / Vera Wang

Lace and floral print have always been a match made in heaven. For this look, I wanted to play with separates instead of a dress. I chose this lace top and tucked it inside a high waisted skirt, leaving outside the tank’s tiny peplum. You likey?

  • Size matters nail polish, ESSIE

For all the details on today’s look, go to FASHIOLISTA.

I have more garden posts in the oven for you! In the meantime, cheer up and wear some flowers this weekend.

Sweet kisses…

PS: Many exciting things are coming up so keep on visiting!

Well good Tuesday my sweet readers! As I promised you before, I’m here with Sweet’n’Raw’s newest series of posts: THE GARDEN GODDESS. Just by looking at the title and the image, you have probably deduced what it’s all about. Flowers have been around for a couple of seasons and this Spring they are back as one of the strongest trends. Like pastel colors, floral print is another obsession of mine (I would happily swallow a bunch of seeds if could grow flowers inside my belly), you can imagine my excitement. When you have a killer floral designer as a mother, you can’t help but love the whole gardening theme. Anyway, for this season is all about the real print, real looking plants and flowers. Garments should look as if wearing a lively, flower bed. Ready to try it out?

TOP: Mary Katrantzou / Erdem / Proenza Schouler / Christopher Kane
