The Goodbye Summer/Hello Fall Mash-up: Flowers and lace

Afternoon, my sweet readers! August is almost over and so is my Summer, with the bf back in Italy and only two weeks left with my family, I’m starting to feel the nostalgia. God, time sure flies when you are having a good time. Anyway, back to what concerns us, fashion. As you probably know, we are in the middle of our season transition series, the Goodbye Summer / Hello Fall mash-up. Going from a season to another is much more fun (at least for me) than the start of a new one. Why? Because you get to play with the trends from both Spring and Fall, it’s the best of both worlds! Today I combined two trends that ooze romance and beauty, Spring’s vivid florals and Fall’s lovely lace. To me, the result of mixing them both is just a match made in heaven. And yes, to make things even more beautiful, I threw in a peplum (it was around for Spring and it’s even stronger for Fall). So without further ado, let’s start dissecting so we can later proceed to mash them both up.

  • THE TREND: Vivid Florals
  • Season: Spring 2012
  • As seen in: Preen, Erdem, Docle & Gabbana, Mary Katrantzou, Balmain (pictured)
  • Key wardrobe pieces: Nothing like a blooming dress and a chiffon blouse

Flowers are a constant in fashion but on Spring it was all about the real deal. No, not about making a bra out of real peonies but about the prints, prints so vivid and beautiful that they almost looked alive. And since we are not ready to give up this pretty trend, brace yourself for the Fall florals, the baroque ones (thank you Domenico and Stefano).

The selection: Sneakers, WET SEAL / Blouse, ROMWE / Dress, TED BAKER / Pants, TED BAKER / Boots, JEFFREY CAMPBELL / Bralet, TOPSHOP / Bag, DOLCE & GABBANA

  • THE TREND: Lovely lace
  • The season: Fall 2012
  • As seen in: Colette Dinnigan, Erdem (pictured), Lanvin
  • Key wardrobe pieces: the shorts, the jumper, the pencil skirt and the blouse

Lace is definitely one of my all-time favorite trends, I’m always happy to see it on the runway. I’m even more happy when I see retailers carrying a great variety of garments made with this ladylike and sexy fabric. This coming season won’t be the exception. One of the major trends we got to see on fashion week was the lace blouse with a different collar and the pencil skirt. J’adore!

The selection: Dress, TOPSHOP / Bodysuit, NORMA KAMALI / Blouse, FAITH CONNEXION / Shorts, ROMWE / Clutch, ASOS / Skirt, HAUTE HIPPIE / Shoes, CHARLOTTE OLYMPIA / Jumper, ISABEL MARANT

For me, playing around with textures and prints feels like I’m a kid and I just got a new toy. The key: never be afraid to try. You won’t know if you’ll like it until you wear it so start experimenting. I paired up a pair of vivid floral jeans with a blazer. To give it a twist, the hard lace top with the peplum and the pumps to add up some spice. What do you think? Oh, and about that Rebecca Minkoff carved satchel… It’s the ultimate dreamboat!

That’s a wrap for today! And remember, Fashion Week is just around the corner!

Sweet kisses…

Last day of May and you know what that means, right? Summer is finally hitting town! And while we get our gear ready to embrace the sun (and some color on our skin), I have for you my sixth piece for Chictopia’s blog, Everybody is Ugly. So far, being a Fashion News Editor for the site has been a great experience. Choosing my theme, preparing my illustrations and writing the article has become a weekly ritual for me (one that I really, really enjoy). But my week’s climax comes when it’s published, receiving all that positive feedback from you and welcoming new readers really makes me happy. For this week’s piece I wanted to do something that really represented my style and personality, of course I had to go with flowers and lace. In case you haven’t read it yet, here it is!

The Style Mash-Up: Three Ladylike Lace and Floral Print Outfits To Try

Fashion never ceases to amaze, it never stops changing, and it always manages to surprise. Long gone are the days when matching your belt to your purse and shoes is the golden rule and bold choices were always part of the “don’t” department. Nowadays, it’s all about fun and self-expression. It doesn’t matter if it’s dressy, messy or daring, as long as you can make it work. Trends are not to be followed in a text book kind of way and there are no step by step recipes for style. You take what you like, and you make it your own, which brings us to our main concept: The Mash-Up.

In music, a mash-up is the blend of one or more pre-recorded songs, in other words, a sound collage. Mash-ups have become really popular lately, hence the Rihanna and Adele composition overload that has taken over the Internet. And since fashion always keeps up with what’s current and never gets left behind, designers came up with the garment version of it. The fashion mash-up is all about mixing and matching different trends, textures, patterns, and prints.

Last September, the Spring 2012 runways were flooded with beautiful and complex ensembles (keeping the collage trend from Fall 2011 alive). Jonathan Saunders presented a collection in which colorful knits, paisley, graphic prints, and delicate appliqué swirls merged into pure fashion poetry. Signora Miuccia showcased her take on mash-ups in both Prada (crochet, cars, jewels and leather, need I say more) and Miu Miu (the A-line lace coats, the micro prints and the ornate cowboy boots still haunt my dreams) and last but not least, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana paired up to perfection their fresh produce prints to their always exquisite lace. They even threw in a pinch of crochet and jacquard.

Dressing up mash-up style is all about using our imagination to create a stylistic and beautiful chaos. Before trying out this trend, here are some tips to take into consideration:

The Garden Mash-up

1. Lose the fear, it’ll only make you match your purse to your shoes and your belt.
2. Have fun and don’t take it all too seriously. That’s the point of this game and you’ll get a better result.
3. It might not look good in your mind, but you’ll never know unless you try it on.
4. Detailed garments are mash-up material, bright solids are not (that’s color-blocking).
5. Mash-up is not a synonym for costume. Think feather skirt, not feather boa.
6. Use evening pieces to pump up day ones.
7. Use day pieces to down play evening ones.
8. When it comes to mash-ups, more is more. Layering, statement jewelry and metallic pieces can help you get the look.
9. Go for textured shoes to add another twist to your ensemble: mirror wedges, embellished pumps, woven sandals.
10. Mashed-up is not the same thing as messed-up. Yes Snooki, we’re talking to you.
11. Floral prints are a girl’s best friend, which brings us to the next argument…

In your closet: SHORTS

Summer is officially here! Hello sun, hello tan, hellooo legs! And what better way to show off our perfect pins than with a gorgeous pair of trendy shorts! This type of garment is a personal favorite, not only are they cute and sexy, but they let you go shorter than a skirt, which elongates your limbs (always remeber that your cheeks must be safely concealed inside, not hanging out there for the whole world to see). Many years ago, designers and retailers were paying more attention to the skirt, the shorts department was a bit limited. But nowadays, shorts are the new skirt. Ruffles, sequins, leather, silk, polka dots, prints, knit and lace. I could go on like this forever! The possibilities are endless and shorts are fun! So here for you, my selection of the ones every girl must have inside her closet for the current season.

  • THE DENIM CUT-OFFS: Oh remeber Jessica Simpson’s long gone glory days? I still drool whenever I see her dancing to “These Boots Are Made for Walking” in her teeny tiny pair of Daisy Dukes! This style is perfect for pulling off a casual and sexy look. Wether you choose to wear them with a tank top and sandals, or with a t-shirt and boots (I adore how they look with a pair of Minnetonka boots), these bottoms have a perfect cut and a fitting form. They can be found in lots of different hues, but you should absolutely have them in blue denim, key pieces in your wardrobe and total life savers! WHERE TO FIND THEM: ASOS
  • PASTEL PERFECT: Spring loves pastel, Summer does too. Now even Autumn and Winter and so must you! I know I do (just take a look at my blog). So choose a color (mint, pastel blue, lilac, baby pink), pick your shape (tailored, pleated, fitted, etc) and have fun mixing them up with your favorite garments. You can go with heels and a cute top for a dressier look. For a day at the beach, a retro, printed, bikini top. Or you can put together different pieces, all in pastel hues, I like to call that “the Ladurée effect”. WHERE TO FIND THEM: TOPSHOP
  • CUTE CROCHET: This screams Coachella, or any other hip music festival! And although I consider myself a “modern music ignorant”, I would love to pair this up with a fabulous tank, a pair of worn out boots and my Ray Ban aviators to go sip beer in a open field while listening to amazing music (probably unknown for me).  They also make great beach cover-ups, fun and flirty. Note: when you can’t see through the holes, you can wear them anytime, when you can actually see the panties, save those for the beach only. Remeber the cheek rule I mentioned above? WHERE TO GET THEM: TOPSHOP

  • STARS AND STRIPES: Move over British flag, USA is here to stay. Before, one would’ve thought it was tacky, today it’s a big trend. And one I am embracing gladly. I have seen the jackets, the washed-up t-shirts, but when I saw the shorts, it was love at first sight. If you wish to sport this trend, look for denim printed ones, boyfriend shorts will do. Stay away from vinyl hot pants, you are not Wonder Woman, you are not a female wrestler and you are not a stripper. One more thing, never, never wear a stars and stripes bikini, you are not a Hawaiian Tropic Contestant and there’s only one Coco (Ice-T’s “classy”wife). WHERE TO GET THEM: TOPSHOP
  • LACEY LOVE: Romantic, cute, and frilled perfection. I got mine high-waisted, but there’s also tiered, and tailored. Lace shorts are so IN right now. I can just imagine myself wearing them with a blush top and a pair of Valentino’s pointed kitten heels with studs. Hello romance with a touch of punk! WHERE TO GET THEM: RIVER ISLAND
  • RUNNING WITH HEELS: The running shorts are no more an “only for the gym” item. And in a very Salvatore Ferragamo S/S 2011 Ad Campaign fashion, they are now part of our everyday wear. No I am not telling you to take out your Nike ones and pair them with a button down. But retailers everywhere (I got mine at H&M for 9 Euros) are making their own streetwear versions. It would’ve seemed unthinkable before, but hey, in Fashion everything’s possible. You don’t have to run in your heels, but you can wear running shorts with them. WHERE TO GET THEM: TOPSHOP
  • SEARED SCALLOPS? No we are not talking mollusks. We are talking about one of the latest trends in bottoms. The scalloped hem. A different and also very graceful finish for a garment. One I consider to give a more sophisitcated and elegant air to the outfit. You can often find this type of hem in high-waisted and tailored shorts. Great for button-downs and detailed tops. WHERE TO GET THEM: TOPSHOP
  • PLEATED PLEASE: Almost like a skirt, but as flirty as a skirt. This type of shorts can very well be described as a culotte. They give an A-line effect and have big front pleats. This style is very figure flattering. You can find them made out of printed fabrics. I have them with flowers, and polka dots, and more flowers and more polka dots! WHERE TO GET THEM: TOPSHOP
  • PAPER-BAG ME: This lovely effect is literally what happens when you close up a brown bag with a ribbon. Pleated in the front and in the back and held together with a waistband, this shorts are among the most coveted items this season. Every store has them, in every color, in different lenghts, made out of different materials. Be careful when buying yours, because often, if the fit is wrong, you can end up with an aspirin looking bum. WHERE TO GET THEM: TOPSHOP
  • DISCO DIVA: What’s not to love about sequins. Every girl loves to be the shiny disco ball (ok ball can be offensive, let’s call it Shiny Disco Hourglass, never seen one of those before). Sequins attract attention and turn heads in our directions. And when you pair them up with a tight pair of hot pants, now that’s pure dynamite! Mix it with a sober top with more coverage. We want to avoide the whole street walker, lady of the night look. WHERE TO GET THEM: ASOS
  • FLOWER POWER: If you haven’t got them yet, you can’t say I didn’t mention it before. I got proof… WHERE TO GET THEM: TOPSHOP
  • LEATHER SHORTS: In this case it’s the opposite. Fall and Winter loved leather, now Spring and Summer do to! Wether you go rock or punk or you pair them with soft garments and lightweight fabrics, leather is one very nice way to go! WHERE TO GET THEM: RIVER ISLAND
So there you have it, my shorts selection! And remeber ladies, July is about to start. And what does that mean? BIG FAT SALES!!!!! Now you don’t have an excuse to go get them all!
Sweet kisses…

S/S Selection: Dolce & Gabbana

Photos, style.com

I’m back! Apartment’s almost ready (I’ll post pics as soon as I’m completely done), internet is back on, and I am here with a new post. For months I have been wanting to write about this collection and I also have been mentioning to you in previous posts that I was going to do so.  So here I go:

Dolce & Gabbana’s Spring/Summer 2011 RTW collection

Stellar, flawless, ethereal, femenine, clean… I could go on and on with adjectives that can describe the italian duo’s collection for the season. Pure perfection! In their very own Sicilan style, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana’s creations were showcased down the runway by some of fashion’s biggest names right now, including brazilian bombshells, Iza Goulart and Alessandra Ambrosio. Long flowing garments, baby-doll dresses, voluminous skirts, all made of white embroidered lace and sheer fabrics. Underneath, old school bras and panties. A collection where white had the leading role, and floral print, leopard and black made a guest appearance. A very  pure collection, but always celebrating female sensuality and the mediterranean woman. Overall, I can say they hit the ball out of the ball park!

To get a similar sicilian look, there are four things that are really important:

  1. All white: the collection showed also leopard and black but for today’s look we will be focusing on this color. It is really important when selecting the garments (if going for separates instead of a dress) that the white hues are similar. Don’t pair up crisp white with off-white. And do not mistake a cream or eggshell with white.
  2. Lace: Select garments with embroidered lace, english embroidery, hand tatting, even some crochet can work.
  3. Sheer: No I am not telling you to show your thong, but go for lightweight fabrics, with a bit of transparence. Or where sheer is mixed with lace patchworks.
  4. Don’t go all tight on yourself, go for volume, movement, pleats!
For my look, I chose an elastic high-waisted pair of shorts, made out with tiers of lace. I paired them up with a front-tie, short-sleeved blouse. A second option can be this 3/4 sleeve dress, made out of delicate lace and with a cutout crochet detail on the waist. Both can be paired up with chunky wooden heels (in the runway they used black or white, but I kind of love tan shoes).
For accessories, I found this bracelet with a chain trio, very similar to the chains that they used to embellish a pair of shoes. And simple rusted gold, heart, pendants, from Dolce & Gabbana to complete the look.
For beauty, an updo is the way to go, clean makeup, very simple, nude lips with some gloss.
Try it on!
Sweet kisses… Continue reading
