NY’s FINEST, part 2

ny's finest 1

It’s MFW day 2, and unlucky us, we woke up this morning to a storm, followed by some light snow. By the time the clock hits 4:00 pm, we will be covered in it. It’s the last post about NYFW, and then we are moving on to the LFW trends! It’s the final countdown, the five shows that made it on to the top: the ringmaster, the prodigy, the surprise, the dynamic duo and even bigger surprise. Are you ready to discover them? Keep on reading!

wang

All eyes were on his show on this edition of NYFW. After all, he is the new Creative Director of Balenciaga, his debut for the French brand is scheduled for Feb. 28. It will be an intimate affair, only a chosen few will get to witness it (Salma, you bitch!). Back to his namesake, leave it to Mr.Wang to completely reinvent the coat. With a basic color palette (black, grey and white), he combined textures and textiles (shiny leather and wool, silk and fur, leather and fur), he draped, he folded and he killed it. The fun detail? Boxing fur gloves and sweater-covered shoes! I may be needing those next Winter. Overall, this was a sartorial sneak peek of what we may be seeing on Balenciaga next week. Is he gonna be able to fill Ghesquiere’s gigantic shoes?

j.crew

I bet you didn’t expect this one, right? With Jenna Lyons on the steering wheel, J. Crew has really been stepping up its game. The Fall 2013 collection was a celebration of all that hard work, but more importantly, it really put J.Crew up there, where the big shot designers live. Every single piece of the presentation was covetable and wearable. The mash-ups were out of this world: colors, florals, herringbone, embllishments and jacquard played beautifully together. The highlight? The coats and the shoes. Those colorful ankle straps and the metallic t-bars will be everywhere next season, mark my words. To Jenna Lyons, you are simply the best!

marc jacobs

Marc has been around for quite a while and he is the ringmaster of NYFW. He has the “big dramatic show” syndrome, like fellow designer Karl Lagerfeld. The difference between these two? Call it age or whatever… With the seasons, Karl’s creations drown in the set (they are not as powerful as they used to be). Marc on the other side, his sets really empower his collections (they work together and they deliver). For this season, he took the concept of evening pajamas to a whole new level. The color palette was soft, but the textures and the fabric were out of this world. The show was all about shiny, almost liquid gowns, beautiful knitwear adorned with lavish, fur stoles and hotpants, lots of them. It was all paired up with retro, ankle-strap sandals.

p schouler

Lázaro and Jack have accustomed us to their crazy mix of prints and beautiful embroideries. This season, we definitely were not expecting what came down the runway: Neutrals, neutrals and more neutrals. They clearly focused on construction, sartorial details and simplicity. But their simplicity is more complex than it seems: they played with volumes and layers, and they did an incredible job. The accessories (one of the main reasons why we love this duo): oversize clutches and the pointy shoes (with bows, with straps, grey, you name it). It was a clean and sophisticated collection, different from what they usually do, but equally perfect.

phillip lim

He has been working hard for the past seasons and this collection really shows how far he’s come. It was, without a doubt, the best show of the bunch. The construction was spot on, the colors and the textures worked to perfection, the shapes and the details were so unexpected and beautiful at the same time. Layering was flawless, just check out the first look and you’ll understand. It was effortless, it was chic, it was urban, it was the epitome of cool. I could go on and on praising him, because the truth is, I can’t stop looking at his collection. He paired motorcycle vests with simple knits, slouchy trousers and statement skirts with sweatshirts and plaid. The highlight of the show? The textured shorts and the patchwork. I give him a standing ovation, how about you?

That’s a wrap! NYFW has been reviewed and covered! What was your favorite show?

Sweet kisses..

NY’S FINEST part 1

ny's finest 2

NYFW is like a race among designers and like in every race, some finish first, some finish last. This year, the competition was tough: lots of great fashion, tons of innovation and genius and not that many misses. Some shows built a lot of expectation around them (we are talking about Galliano’s comeback for ODLR and first A. Wang show after being chosen as Balenciaga’s new Creative Director). Some others let the clothes and the spot on tailoring talk for themselves. Here is the first part of NY’s finest. From the 10th spot to the 6th.

red valentino

It was one of the first shows or presentations in this NYFW edition and what wonderful way to start the week. Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli have been doing a great job a creative directors at Valentino this past seasons. With every collection, it becomes more certain, there is no one better than this duo to run the brand. The inspiration was obvious, Hansel & Gretel, folk fairy tales, craftsmanship at its best. Short hemlines, floral tiers, hand painted prints, bows, capes and embroideries were paired up with shoes that were cute as a button and delicate knee socks. It was a dream, a fairy tale dream.

ALTUZZARRA

I have always considered Joseph Altuzarra as part of NYFW’s Fantastic Four (he is up there with Prabal Gurung, Thakoon and Young Mr. Wang) and this season, he definitely proved why he is part of the cool group. It was a sexy enough fall for Mr. Altuzarra, one where leather, slits, sheer panels and big buttons had the leading roles. And even tough I’m a fake fur kinda gal, that white fluffy number did make a strong statement on the runway. The highlight? The architectural stitching details and the texture mix.

THEORY

Not only is Oliver Theyskens the sexiest French designer on Earth (all-time sexiest will always be my Tom Ford), he is also the most talented. He doesn’t need big drama and theatrical presentations to do his thing. He knows shapes and tailoring and it shows. For this season, quilting got the Theyskens treatment and if this is quilting, I can’t wait to get quilted (yeah, I know, I used quilted three times in one sentence, I’m overexcited). His knee boots were cooler than the infamous Givenchy ones from last Fall and his trousers, well his trousers speak for themselves. Bravo, Oliver! You make simple complicated and vice versa, that’s why we love you!

ODLR

Galliano and de la Renta together? When the news about this collaboration broke out, it seemed almost too good to be true. The picture perfect designer and the drama queen that is John Galliano? Yes, it happened and yes, the result was pure bliss. The shapes screamed Oscar, but the details screamed John. His influence on the runway was clear but not overpowering. The balance was great. And the hats? The hats was all Galliano, I can bet my life on that. It may be the start of something new between this two, it may have been just a way to re-introduce Galliano to the fashion world. Whatever it was, it worked!

PRABAL

I have a feeling he is about to take the “prodigy” crown from Alexander Wang and he deserves it. Prabal Gurung and his prints have made his show one of the most expected in NYC and he also just presented his collection for Target. The mood for  his Fall 2013 show? He took his military inspiration and glammed it up. The show opener was a hit and just the beginning of what would be an extraordinary catwalk. Harnesses, endless slits, tailored coats, precise and meticulous details and the shoes, those multi-straps are gonna be all over next season. Expect to see one or two Hollywood youngsters with his dramatic gowns on the red carpet.

That’s it for today! Don’t forget to check back tomorrow to discover the top 5!

Sweet kisses…

NYFW FALL 2013: The Trend Report

NYFW TRENDS

New York Fashion Week ended a week ago (a long time when it comes to the Fashion Month) and left a bunch of trends behind. As we are getting ready to welcome a new season (thank God Spring is just around the corner), we also get to discover what will be in store for us next Fall. Remember, in Fashion, we are always one step ahead. For Fall 2013, New York went back to basics. After a few seasons of surprises (Fall collections that looked more like Spring ones and vice versa), the Big Apple gave us old school, heavyweight, cold weather fashion. No need to mention the regulars, as they are not considered trends anymore: leather and fur were all over the Fall 2013 runways. Moving on to the novelties, designers really went the extra mile this time. They toned down the prints, but they really payed special attention to tailoring and textures. Mash-ups will be the next big thing next Winter.

As I mentioned before, this is a very different coverage from my previous ones. I wanted to focus more on the trends and on the shows that really made a statement than on reviewing single shows. Here’s a recap of the trends that walked the New York runways last week. Ready?military

NYFW Fall 2013: Red Valentino

red valentino cover

If you have been following my blog for a while now, you’ll notice that this season’s coverage is a little bit different from my previous ones. The reason? I’ve been blogging for about two years and I have learned to recognize what my readers like and also, I have learned to organize my time and posts always maintaining a good quality in my images and text (I’ve found that putting five or six reviews in one post is just too much to handle, for myself and for my visitors). That’s why I have decided to focus on one show a day. How it works? From the day’s line-up I will choose the one show that really made an impact and review it (accompanied by one of my illustrations, of course). Even though today was the official day 1 (always after the AMFAR Gala), yesterday some collections were presented.  Among those was a special one, it was love at first sight: RED VALENTINO.

RED VALENTINO

“Dreamy Valentino”, that’s how people usually call the brand, and you know what? Over the seasons, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli have done just that, they have made us dream. Collection after collection, they keep on nailing it in the most romantic and sophisticated way. From their elaborate laces and meticulous embroideries to their ladylike shapes and spot on tailoring, they get as close to perfection as they could possibly get. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, Monsieur Garavani must be a very, very proud man. The second line of the brand, Red Valentino, presented the Fall 2013 collection yesterday in New York City. And once again, the designer duo managed to take our breath away.

The candy forest wallpaper said it all, it was a fairy tale inspired collection: Hansel & Gretel. The folk influence was clearly there, but it was playful, it was young and it was beyond beautiful. Their petticoat dresses and skirts were embellished with flowers and hand painted prints. Waistlines were accented with pretty bows. The capes were particularly pretty, but prettier were the ankle strap pumps and the knee socks. It was all so picture perfect, is was like it came out of a story book (a book I would love to live in).

Sweet kisses…

FASHION WEEK COVERAGE, Feb. 7 – March 6

FASHION WEEK copyIt’s that time of the year again, almost! We are a week away from NYFW’s kick-off and the beginning of the always exciting Fashion month. Right now, NYC is as cold as cold can get (well, not if you compare it with Eastern Europe), here’s hoping that when it’s Milan’s turn, the weather has softened at least a bit. It’s time for the Autumn/Winter collections to hit the runways and while I am more of a Spring girl (I’ve told you that a million times), when it comes to Fashion Week, I’m a sucker for everything! It’s a goal of mine to make the Fashion Month tour, but it’ll have to wait for at least another season to make that happen (here’s hopin’). In the meantime, I will have to settle with covering the whole thing via internet for you. Here are some things you need to know about this FW edition:

  • There will be no Alexander McQueen runway show, due to Sarah Burton’s pregnancy. There will be a small presentation for a chosen few ( 50 editors and journalists).
  • Peter Som also announced that he won’t be presenting his collection in the NYFW runways. He will be presenting, but on another format.
  • Chris Benz is also skipping Fashion Week, he plans to revamp the brand for a new and more contemporary target.
  • Betsey Johnson will be showing on NYFW, so does Kenneth Cole after a seven year absence.
  • Swedish retailer, H&M, will be holding a Paris fashion show for the first time in eight years.
  • Also, Whistles has announced they will be showing at LFW. Seems retailers are following Topshop’s Unique steps.

THE DATES:

  • NYFW: February 7-14
  • LFW: February 15-19
  • MFW: February 20- 26
  • PFW: February 26- March 6

OFFICIAL SITES:

Remember that most of the shows can be watched live on streaming! I will be providing all the links and dates on my FB page. Like it HERE. In the meantime, keep checking back for more coverage on the Fashion Month. It’s gonna be a good one!

Sweet kisses…

NYFW COVERAGE: It’s a wrap!

Good Morning, my sweet readers! I’m enjoying the last days in Mexico City, with my family and friends. Even though it is always hard to say goodbye, getting back to Milano just in time for FashionWeek is really exciting. Since this weekend we celebrated the Mexican Independence, between all the party and the Tequila, I fell a little behind with my reviews (blame it on the shots). Anyway, the last five from NYC are here, written and ready for you. Keep on reading, baby!

ANNA SUI SPRING 2013

Ever since I was a 13 year old, I’ve been a fan of Anna Sui. Her perfumes were a regular on my beauty table. Each season, even though she never seems to steal the spotlight, she manages to deliver beautiful, interesting and delightful collections. The thing about this designer, she puts special attention to details. Each look, each piece, each accessory, has that certain uniqueness and that Anna Sui signature style. She doesn’t seem to follow a certain line of inspiration (each ensemble is very different from the rest), but when you put everything together, there is that sense of collection. For her Spring 2013, Anna Sui was all about rocker with a French twist. With models the size of Karlie Kloss and Lindsey Wixson, the runway was painted with micro-florals (the kind we really, really love). The girls sported fishnet tights (cropped, of course) with flared dresses and cropped jackets, lace underneath plaid (the punk touch), textures on textures and rips all over amost everything else. The funky ingredient? Candy-colored hair!

PROENZA SCHOULER SPRING 2013

When it comes to Proenza Schouler, forget about Ralph Lauren, forget about Calvin Klein and as much as it hurts to say it, forget about Marc Jacobs. This is the star of NYFW and it’s not something that’s earned easily (Jack and Lazaro have worked their pretty asses off, season after season). Thier Fall 2012 show was a beautiful display of fashionable perfection (the peacocks and the skirts were pure poetry) and a show that was gonna be hard to top. By just looking at a couple of runway shots, we can safely say that they managed to pull it off. By entering the world of the digital print, they just proved they can do it all and kill it all (in a good way). Knee-length was the only length, print patchwork their strongest element and as always, flawless tailoring their weapon of choice.

Boxy jackets, leather garments, perforated skirts, and colored snakeskin (move over, blue eel, python’s in the house) accompanied Proenza Schouler’s cheery print collage. As for the accessories (a matter that has to be addressed, we are talking about the boys that gave womankind the gift of the PS1), gladiator-like shoes (big, big ass, ginormous trend for next season), cut-out sandals, embellished ones and of course, printed bags. We just can’t get enough of Lazaro, Jack and their unique creativity and style.

CALVIN KLEIN SPRING 2013

She’s sexy and she knows it! That’s the Spring 2013 woman for designer Francisco Costa. But we are not talking sexy in a Victoria’s Secret-pouting-brazilian-bombshell kind of way, we are talking sexy in a demure, sophisticated and classy one. This Calvin Klein collection was all about sheer, shapes, panels, inserts and a very neutral color palette. As minimal as one can get (duh, after all, it’s Calvin Klein), Costa sent and array of mid-length skirts and cocktail dresses down de runway. With some cut-outs and plunging necklines here and there, the collection oozed classy sex, yeah, as strange as that may sound, that’s what came to mind. It was definitely a great way to bid farewell to NYFW, great indeed.

RALPH LAUREN SPRING 2013

About the sarape thing on Ralph Lauren’s show, we are not even going to go there. Ralph Lauren has always given us themed catwalks, Gatsby for Spring 2012 and Dapper boys for Fall 2012. This time, the designer was all about the Latin  vibe (a little over-the-top, if you ask me). Maybe it’s just me, but there’s more to us than the Mexican blanket cliché, or the Spanish matador jacket (when Moschino did it, I loved it, this time, not so much). It’s like when it comes to music and someone asks: “So you are latin? I love the Gypsy Kings”. I don’t think that Bamboleo is the only definition for our music. Anyway, enough with the bashing and on to the positive: the evening wear.

Ralph Lauren is definitely getting stronger and stronger in this department. Last season, he killed it with the silk and the feathers, this season even more so! Wanna bet that little white number with the red rose makes it on to red carpet? I’m pretty sure it will. Satin, column dresses, liquid gowns and a few embellished numbers were part of Ralph’s evening display. A beginning I’d like to forger, but a closing that’s worth remebering.

REED KRAKOFF SPRING 2013

Oh man, Reed Krakoff just keeps on getting better and better by the season. Each piece from each and every single one of the ensembles looked like it really belonged. The chunks of color (neutral colors) worked perfectly with each other and with the tailoring. There was sheer where sheer was needed, there where panels where panels where needed and pink-colored python (my dream finally came true). The vibe? Triple S: sexy, sophisitcated and sporty. The most important element of the show: sweatshirts (big trend this Fall and even bigger for next Spring). As for the accessories, I’m gonna be opening soon the “Help this poor soul buy her pair of Reed Krakoff, two-tone, strappy sandals” fund (just in case you want to donate to this humble cause).

LOOK OF THE DAY

When it comes to color combnations, I always love twisting and turning until it feels right. For today’s look, I wanted some drama and colors like Oxblood and Bottle Green are just that. To soften the look, a threw in a little blush (that Zara blazer, the one that popped more than once on those NYFW street style snapshots, is just a dreamboat) and to spice things up, a little leopard print never hurts, right? This will be the last days of shorts and bare pins, before Fall and tights fall upon us. Let’s make the most of it, shall we?

For all the details on today’s look, go to FASHIOLISTA

That’s a wrap for NYC (I just realized I totally forgot Rodarte, but I’m too lazy to review the Mulleavys now)! Moving on to London and all it’s excentric fabulousness!

Have a great week, sweet kisses…

NYFW COVERAGE: Get in line!

NYFW came to an end today, but since I’m no style.com (yet) I still have a few reviews in the oven. London will be kicking-off tomorrow, the Fashion destination that to me is the most interesting and eclectic of them all. Anyway, we are not going to take the spotlight away from New York. It was a fabulous opening for the coming season, unexpected and so different from Spring 2012. Long gone are the pastels and long gone is the romantic lace. Some collections even had a certain Fall feeling to it, others had Wintery coats. That’s the thing about New York, even though you are prepared to expect the unexpected, there’s always that extra element of surprise. Today I have for you Stacy Bendet’s unique glamour, Marc Jacobs and his Spring stripes, Reem Acra’s Tinseltown style, Mr. Theyskens chic nonchalance and a very Marant Sachin + Babi. Are you ready to rumble? I sure hope so!

ALICE + OLIVIA SPRING 2013

Do you follow Stacy Bendet on Instagram? I do, and all I can say is she is as fabulous as her clothes are. Alice + Olivia is not only beautiful but it has that certain uniqueness that not many brands have. Through the seasons, Bendet always puts that certain special something on her runway shows. They are not common catwalks, they are more like sets, they tell a story, they set the mood and the atmosphere. Spring 2013 was no exception, with a colorful and swirly canvas, she presented a total of 38 looks, all 1950′s inspired. Another interesting detail about her collections, they never have that expected continuance (that’s what makes them even more interesting). Cocktail dresses, flirty prints, ladylike shapes, and textures came together for a retro-fabulous result. No 50′s collection is complete without peplums and polka dots, and that’s exactly what we got! Cheers, Stacy!

MARC JACOBS SPRING 2013

I’m usually the ultimate Marc Jacobs fan, when he does Vuitton my heart stops for a second. For this collection, I wanted to see a more cheerier Marc (the LV pastel collection really hit me hard and I have not been able to forget it), but it wasn’t that cheery at all. It was all about lines, thick vertical ones, t-shirts (with no pants), cropped blouses (big trend) and jumpsuits. The color palette included white, crimson, beige and red. Textures included leather, sequins, sheer fabrics and lingerie.

The highlight of the show, the red dress gone t-shirt (or viceversa) with the collar ruffles and the beige midi dress on Miss Cara Delevigne (NYFW hottest model). Our least favorite part, the maxi dress with the brown stripes and shoulder cut-outs. As for the shoes, welcome to pointy, flat land (we are kind of liking it down here).

REEM ACRA SPRING 2013

I think it’s safe to say that Reem Acra has a thing for shiny catwalks, Fall 2012 was a flashy red, Spring 2013 a bright blue. Personally, I think it has to do with how it contrasts with Acra’s Hollywood glam collections. As expected, the last looks from the show wear all red carpet-ready gowns. No one can deny they were beautiful (and you’ll probably see one or two when award season comes next January), but it was the first part that was more interesting. It all started out with clean and ladylike silhouettes. Tailored, fitted, mid-length dresses (think Victoria Beckham’s dress of choice) appeared on the runway in white, turquoise, an eye-catching, fire red. Then it all loosened up, pleats, sheer details and panels and silk, lots of beautiful silk work.

THEYSKENS’ THEORY SPRING 2013

If someone can pull-off a Spring gone Winter collection is Oliver Theyskens. He doesn’t follow suit, he doesn’t follow trends and he always succeeds on not doing what everyone else does. As always, he presented us with a neutral and dark color palette. Each look tailored and cut to perfection, each look simple but flawless, each look so different from the other. Sophisticated like never before, Oliver went from smart bermudas paired with matching, oversize shirts to pantsuits, shifts and yes, wool garments. The highlight of the show, the sheer skirt suit, peplum included.

SACHIN + BABI SPRING 2013

Think of this collection as a more ethnic Isabel Marant. The tight jeans, the simple tanks and the cropped embellished jackets combo has that cool chick vibe with hints of indie. The three tier skirt from the opening has to be one of the most ethereal garments ever made. The idea of pairing it up with a jacket and a bikini top may seem tacky in our minds, but on that runway, not only did it work, it was fabulous. Embroidery, military accents, cropped jackets, sheer garments, volume, matching pants and more were among the elements that made the Sachin + Babi collection as dreamy as a dream could get.

LOOK OF THE DAY

Isabel Marant has the Midas touch, and trust me on this one: Western shirts with embroidery are about to become the next, big thing for Fall. I had to do a look with the blouse as the star. The leopard thing? In my mind just seemed right and I’m pretty sure that with the pastel skinnies the result is mind-blowing.

For all the details on today’s look, go to FASHIOLISTA

That’s a wrap! Tomorrow we will have more from NYFW and start your LFW engines because the madness begins tomorrow! Have a great day!

Sweet kisses…

NYFW COVERAGE: A birdcage never looked so pretty…

Good Tuesday, my sweet readers! Only three days left and it will be a wrap for NYFW. Thankfully, we still have London, my Milan and Paris. This is our third “runway reviews” post and so far, I couldn’t be more delighted with the Spring 2013 collections. Today I have for you an interesting mix: nature-loving Thakoon, a more mature and fabulous Posh Spice, Tibi’s nonchalant chic, Derek Lam’s texture parade and 3.1 Phillip Lim’s eclectic charm. Now, before I say too much, let’s get this thing started!

THAKOON SPRING 2013

Faithful to his origins, Thakoon always adds that special spice to his shows. His Spring 2013 collection was no exception. Clearly inspired by nature (Spring screams for beautiful flowers and birds), the designer sent out the runway a mix of lively prints, beautiful layers, an interesting texture mash-up and a color palette so diverse it only made things more interesting. Spotted: sky blue makes an appearance, again. As for the trends: sheer madness, jacquard, lace appliques, flared skirts and peplums. What’s not to love?

The most interesting and beautiful thing: birdcages took the form of dresses for his opening looks. Another thing we loved? The wallflower print jumpers with the transparent detail. For the shoes, thick double strap shoes (big accessory trend so far). Overall, it was feminine, sweet, romantic and garden-inspired (I love all things garden-inspired). To me, Thakoon really captured what Spring should feel and look like.

VICTORIA BECKHAM SPRING 2013

If she keeps this going, she might become the next best thing. Sure, she is a singer turned designer, lucky enough to have England’s resident hunk as a husband. That always helps steal the spotlight! But Victoria Beckham has proved to be more than a celebrity with a budget (think Jessica Simpson and her Louboutin knock-off “designs”), she has creativity, drive and talent (whether she is behind the line or there is someone else, we are so buying the whole act). For her Spring 2013 show, she concentrated more on the details than on the colors. No prints and a four-color palette: poppy red, black, nude and white. Clean silhouettes, perfectly tailored shapes, lingerie inserts, flared skirts (big trend alert) and the nude booties were among the elements she presented on the runway. It was effortless chic all the way. Big kudos to Vic, she really killed it this time!

TIBI SPRING 2013

Tibi is the ultimate indulgence for the cool kids out there, think blogger Aimee Song with her cropped skinny jeans, ankle-strap, barely there sandals and killer set of pins. Amy Smilovic kept prints to a minimum this time, it was all about the leather, the color blocks, the leg-flashing garments, the perforated details and the flared skirts. Doing what she does best, it was street chic all the way. Expect pieces of this collection all over the blog scene next season, not only because it’s fabulous, but because it’s more affordable than that $5,000 Balmain jacket we constantly weep for. The highlight: how she worked that pink and yellow with the rest of the muted colors.

DEREK LAM SPRING 2013

Call it the clash of the textures, that’s Derek Lam’s Spring 2013 show. With a color palette so lively and diverse (mustard, crimson, bright blue, bright yellow) and bold shapes and details, the designer managed to make a strong statement on the runway. Far from his California-inspired Spring 2012 collection, Lam gave this one a Fall feeling. He paired up detailed pencil skirts with oversize, sleeveless sweatshirts (my favorite part of the show). His Spring trench coat will be among the coveted items for next season and his printed shifts will definitely follow behind. It was an easy to wear and sporty-chic collection. Everyone will be wanting a piece of that, for sure!

3.1 PHILLIP LIM SPRING 2013

Perhaps one of the most interesting collections so far, different from anything we’ve seen from Phillip Lim before and with so many elements to take in at the same time. From the delightful micro-floral print to the game of textures, it was complexity at its best. Inspired by Dada-ism and its influences, the collection had that rocker chic vibe with a touch of grunge.

Layers, inserts, sheer details, built-in garments, print mash-ups, texture mix merged, resulting in total careless chic. My favorite part: the I heart Nueva York t-shirt and the sweater, floral bomber he paired up with a tee and a skirt. For the shoes, as eclectic as the rest of the collection. It was unexpected, but in a good way (a great one, if you ask me).

LOOK OF THE DAY

The thing I love about the army jacket trend, is that I get to girlify it as much as I want. What better way to play with it than by pairing it up with a lace dress with floral details. It may sound weird, but it seems to work. To add another twist, lace-up shoes are the perfect match. For accessories, keep it simple and golden. What do you think?

NYFW COVERAGE: Board Shorts Gone Cute

Hello, hello my sweet readers! As promised, I’m back with more NYFW runway reviews. Pulling-off this coverage by myself is a lot of work (browsing pics, choosing them, editing them, putting the looks together, sketching, more editing, writing reviews, proofreading and so on), but it’s definitely worth it. In this FW edition, contrasts have been the main trend so far: the sweet versus the hard, the fabric mash-up, the print mix. Sheer is back, stronger than ever, and so are cut-outs. Florals are making their seasonal (and regular) comeback and jacquard will remain for Spring (thank you, Fashion God). The color trend? Surprisingly, sky blue (I kinda wanted this color around since Chanel released their Skyline nail polish). And please, for the love of God, stop saying that the harness trend is Fifty Shades of Grey inspired. Bondage has been around fro much longer than that and those collections were ready to be produced when that shitty mommy porn sadly became a sensation (sorry for the rant, I just had to put it out there).
Anyway, after what seemed like the longest introduction, here they are, the reviews of the day:

ALTUZARRA

As I stated on my last post, Joseph Altuzarra is part of my NYFW favorite trio (along with Prabal Gurung and Alexander Wang). Known for his eclectic and beautiful prints (talk about his tropical parrots from S/S 2012 and the graphic horse jumpers from Fall), this season he didn’t disappoint in that department (or in any department whatsoever). His collection lacked the usual Spring feeling, but that’s what made it so special. The thing about Altuzarra, he manages to twist the trends and revamp them. For this collection, he gave fringes a whole new meaning and reinvented the gladiator sandal (that shoe is gonna be all over the editorial world this coming Spring, mark my words). His shapes and tailoring? Flawless. An that jacket-over-the-shoulders thing, we better start embracing it right now!

JILL STUART

Last Spring it was the sorbet parade, this Fall the rocker chic vibe and now she gave us romance. One thing is clear, the Jill Stuart show never gets boring. The runway opened in black, black with a feminine vibe. As the show kept on going, the colors kept on changing but there was never brightness, all shades were mute (eggshell, blush, pastel peach and that aqua number). As for the shapes, everything was clean, everything was beautiful and everything screamed romance. Stuart’s elements included full skirts, straight trousers, sheer fabric, cropped tops (strong, strong trend), jacquard (designers can’t get enough of this fabric), lace and sequins.

The designer, for the evening part, had a clear 1920′s inspiration and a ballerina one with a twist. Her garments flattered the female form to perfection. As for the shoes, wide ankle straps were also present on her show. Overall, a pretty collection that didn’t need the bright color factor to pop.

RAG & BONE

Rag & Bone has got it going on! Definitely one of the shows with more swag when it comes to NYFW. Over the years, David Neville and Marcus Wainwright have mastered the art of layering and on their Spring 2013 runway, it definitely showed. They gave their looks a chic spin on sporty, that’s what made their presentation so special and interesting. Bombers paired up with flirty, flare skirts, leather trousers and shorts with plunging neckline tops, skater dresses and denim, all were among the elements that were sent out the runway. As for the shoes, they gave platform sandals and wedges a whole new meaning, a beautiful one.

ALEXANDER WANG

He has been dubbed as king of the accessories department and it’s clear why. Usually, I start by reviewing the clothes but shoes like this can’t be ignored. Like his fellow designer Altuzarra, Mr. Wang gave the gladiator a whole new spin, a minimal one. You can’t help but wonder how a couple of leather straps and a heel can shock so much (in a good way). There’s no explanation, this man just makes it work. Moving on to the clothes, it was all about the cut-out. Almost every look had them, almost every look rocked.

From barely there dresses with eternal slits to metallic tops, everything had that futuristic vibe with a sporty twist (Alexander Wang really knows how to handle the sporty trend). The thing no one expected? The lights went off, the dresses glowed. Now that’s what you call a killer finale.

PETER SOM

Thank you, Peter Som! Than you for keeping my beloved pastels around for Spring 2013, thank you for giving them a new twist and thank you for throwing in some florals into the mix. Som has proved to the fashion world that when it comes to prints, he is among the masters. This time, it was flowers, but not your usual kind of flowers, they were all ethereal and abstract. For his 2013 Spring collection, he paired up soft knits with printed hotpants (I know what I’ll be wearing next season), he mixed beautiful Jacquard jackets with delicate jumpers. The floral appliqué garments were definitely the highlight of the show.

Board shorts gone cute? Oh yeah, Mr. Som definitely pulled that off (expect Zara to go crazy with this next season). After the pastel party, the show got some rusty coating: mustard, burnt orange and gold. Matching tops and bottoms has definitely become one of the strongest trends at the moment and one Som has embraced beautifully. As for the accessories, the pointed court with the ankle wrap is going to be huge next Spring (Jason Wu, Jill Stuart and Prabal Gurung also had them on their show), so start saving up!

LOOK OF THE DAY

A neutral color palette is always bound to be a great hit. I love neutral color-blocking but this time, I wanted to try a neutral mash-up. A lantern, python print skirt and a textured jumper with an embellishment may not seem like the perfect match but when put together, the result is unbelievably beautiful. Here’s what I used for this ensemble.

Ten reviews down, a ton more to go! Bring the fashion on! Are you enjoying the Spring 2013 collections? I know I’m in love with Altuzarra’s edgy take on the gladiator shoe. See ya next post!

Sweet kisses…
