A Modern Day Dorothy

dorothy96

I know, I know, I’m supposed to be covering the frenzy that is Fashion Week right now, but time is not on my side here. I’ll be doing it little by little, in case you are still interested. But now let’s go to today’s image.

The first time I saw the Wizard of Oz when I was a kid, I immediately fell in love with the slippers. Who cared about the lion that talked, or the Good Witch of the North’s sparkly princess gown, or the yellow brick road, I could only focus on the magical and glitzy pair of heels.  Dorothy’s red, glittery slippers quickly became top of the list when it came to Christmas and birthday wish lists. But my mom wasn’t gonna gift her child a pair of red, shiny heels so I used to get Keds instead. Then came the discovery, a pair of silver glittery pumps inside my mother’s closet. Naturally, those became part of my outfits whenever we played pretend. I was about 8 so they obviously didn’t fit but I walked around the house all the time like a waddling duck in my mom’s magical silver slippers. It never was about the color, it was about the glitter, until now. Dorothy’s red slippers and my mom’s silver heels have morphed into a new aspirational item, a pair of pink glitter Miu Miu pumps and trust me on this one, now that I’m old enough to buy them for myself, I will (as soon as I find $650 bucks lying around somewhere).

Wishing you a great week!

SHALLOW SOPH: Everyone comes with baggage…

baggage96

For those of you who haven’t met Sophie, let me introduce her to you. She’s a more irreverent, cynical, shallow and blatant paper version of me. You’ve seen her before, all dressed in pink and flowers, lace and pastels, with her pretty lips and her perfect hair. But don’t get fooled by that sweet and sugary packaging, the inside is more complex and raw than it could possibly be (hence the name of the blog). That’s why I wanted to devote a section to one of the many sides of Sophie, the shallow one. How it works? I take a beautiful and inspirational quote and let Sophie twist it and turn into her own trivial masterpiece, a frivolous but always stylish statement. Materialistic and almost profane? Yes, that’s what makes it fun (Shallow Soph takes over the keyboard sometimes).

“Everyone comes with baggage. Find someone who loves you enough to help you unpack”.

or

“Everyone comes with baggage. Find someone who loves you enough to build you a big-ass walk-in closet”.

I’d rather have the closet! Who needs help unpacking when you can organize, fold and store all your belongings inside those shiny and new drawers?

From Shallow Soph, with love…

The Goodbye Summer/Hello Fall Mash-up: Pastels and Oxblood

Rise & shine, my sweet readers! Summer is almost over and we have to start focusing all of our attentions on Fall (stocking for it, that is). Fashion Week is a month away and the coming season as well, that’s why our wardrobes must be armed and ready. As I told you on my last post (click HERE to read it), I wanted to mix up the best trends from this season with the new ones to bid farewell to Summer and welcome Fall. I wanted to start with a personal favorite from S/S 2012, pastels and probably the strongest color trend from A/W 2012, oxblood. Mixing them both is unexpected and fabulous: drama vs. sugar! So without further ado, let’s start!

  • THE TREND: Pastel colors
  • Season: Spring 2012
  • As seen in: Meadham Kirchhoff (pictured), Louis Vuitton, Jonathan Saunders, Versace, Versus
  • Key wardrobe pieces: mint skinny jeans and a powder pink silk button-down

Pastel was the king of all trends this season, not only did almost every designer used it on the catwalk, but retailers candy-coated their shops from head to toe. It’s fun, it’s pretty and guess what? Not always sugary, depends of the treatment you give it and on the pairings you make. We won’t have to bid farewell to this trend (I am positive that we’ll be seeing a lot of it next season), but we have to make way for the Fall King of trends and sadly powdery shades are not it.

The selection: Necklace, ZARA / Blouse, H&M / Jeans, RAG & BONE / Dress, RIVER ISLAND / Wedges, BOOHOO / Flats, ASOS / Clutch, DVF / Cropped shirt, TOPSHOP

Welcoming new trends and discovering them is my favorite part of a new season and happy I was to discover this bloody and sexy color as the strongest trend when it comes to shades. Oxblood was among the most used colors on the February catwalks, from the Isabel Marant’s chic western and Diane Von Furstenberg’s sexy woman (pictured) to Alexander Wang’s shiny coats. If you ask me, this is the new black (and I am a black hater, but this, this I’m ready to embrace).

  • THE TREND: Oxblood
  • Season: Fall 2012
  • As seen in: DVF, Isabel Marant, Alexander Wang, Rodarte, Acne, Peter Som
  • Key pieces: A peplum top, skinny jeans, slippers, a jumper

The selection: Dress, RIVER ISLAND / Peplum top, TOPSHOP / Jumper, THE ROW / Sunnies, STELLA McCARTNEY / Oxfords, VALENTINO / Skirt, T by ALEXANDER WANG / Skinny jeans, MARC by MARC JACOBS

OXBLOOD + PASTELS LOOK

A look that can work perfectly for work, for everyday life or even happy hour. The clash of the feminine sweater with the wild, wax pants make the whole thing more interesting. The shoes, you might hate them at first, but never underestimate the power of the off-white pump until you try it!

  • Powder pink sweater, CARVEN
  • Double collar shirt, ASOS
  • Wax oxblood pants, ZARA
  • Off-white pumps, ASOS

ACCESSORIES:

BEAUTY

  • Stylenomics nail polish, ESSIE

That’s it for the day! Wishing you a perfect week,

Sweet kisses…

SWEET’n’RAW DOES CHICTOPIA

Good Saturday my sweet readers! As I told you before, I am now contributing with a weekly article for Chictopia’s blog, Everybody is Ugly. My first piece was published on Monday and I am armed and ready with my next one. Being able to collaborate with such a big and fashionable site has been a wonderful experience so far. Yes, I get to do my two favorite things, illustrate and write about fashion, but it’s really all about the feedback from the site and the response I get from the readers, each like, each share and each comment have made this humble brain a very, very happy camper. . Without further ado, here it is, Sweet’n’Raw’s first article for Chictopia:

3 Chic Ways To Wear Pastels Without Looking Like An Easter Egg

It’s official, we have been invaded! Not by a bunch of computer-generated aliens out of a Men in Black movie, but by some deliciously sweet candy and sorbet shades. Trend forecasters predicted that the color battle of the season would be pastel vs. neon, and clearly, the powdery hues prevailed. And while neon remains as one of the trendy bunch, pastel wins the title as the most powerful trend for spring.

For the runway shows, Louis Vuitton sent a fantasy eyelet parade down the runway, Christopher Kane went all floral and brocade, Prada had our engines started, Versace called the mermaids out to play and Chanel took us underwater in a magical world. All of them had one thing in common— they all did it in a pastel way.

These days, walking into any store is like a trip to Candyland (remember that cute and mouth-watering board game)? Pastel colors are so visually appealing that you can risk getting a sugar high just by looking at them. It’s easy to associate them with girly and ladylike styles, we usually think macarons, lace, icing and bows, but in a fashion world, where nothing is what it seems and fun is the main purpose of it all, sugary shades have much more to offer.

Here’s an experiment: self-proclaim yourself the King Midas of pastels (stick to mint, vanilla, lilac, baby pink, peach and powder blue) and candy-coat everything you touch or wear. Here are three outfits for inspiration, all of them ‘pastelized’.

SWEET’N’GIRLY
It may be the most predictable of them all, but that doesn’t mean you don’t get to have fun with it.

→What to wear:
• Sheer blouses or embellished tops
• High waisted bottoms: skater skirts or pleated shorts
• Soft cardigans, tailored blazers or Bouclé jackets
• T-strap shoes, they give the whole ensemble the extra cute factor.
• Sweet and pretty jewelry.
• Final touch: a shimmering gloss and a creamy nail polish.

BOYISH BONBON
Workwear is not what it used to be and yes, you can pull off a masculine look by wearing candy colored garments.

→What to wear:
• A pastel, fitted blazer
• A pair of tapered trousers with a high waist
• A button-down, embellished collars always give the look an extra pop
• Strappy sandals and a clutch for a fun twist
• Arm candy and an updo

SUGAR ROCK
Rocker chic with a hint of cute, what’s not to love?

→What to wear:
• A pastel biker jacket
• Cut-off shorts or distressed jeans
• Graphic tees, jersey tanks or silky racerback tops.
• Booties or converse
• Studded, spiked, metallic and woven accessories
• A slouchy bag
• Statement nail polish

Pastels are here this season. They may not be here for next season (fingers crossed they’ll still be around), so let them take over your world!

What are your thoughts on this first piece for Chictopia? Feel free to comment, share or like! Next one will be published on Monday and I’m definitely doing something very, very different, so stay tuned. Coming up next for Sweet’n’Raw, another collaboration, this time for a brand (more details soon). Sweet’n’Raw is growing and I couldn’t be happier.

Sweet kisses…

SOME FEEDBACK

Conversations I have with myself:

Sweet: Gee, Raw, what do you want to do tonight?

Raw: The same thing we do every night, Sweet – try to take over the Fashion World!
