BIKINI SEASON 2013: Hola México

No, this is not the “embrace the sarape and sombrero” kind of post, nor the “dos cervezas por favor” one. There’s much more to México than those things, there’s a lot of heritage, a lot of traditions and yes, we are a damn colorful culture (and we love it). From the meticulous embroideries, to the ethnic patterns and spot on craftsmanship, we really, really have  lot to offer.  And this season, when it comes to beachwear, aztec prints and folk florals are killing it! House of Holland adopted the sarape stripes last season, it was about time the rest of the world followed. So here’s a very colorful and very Mexican beachwear post, far, far away from the usual clichés.

mexican mix

Folk florals: You might be wondering what the heck are these, what’s the difference between them and the normal floral print. The answer? They usually are more colorful, they have a boho vibe and sometimes, mixed-in patterns. Pair your eye-catching bottoms with  a strapless, tie-front top, the brighter the better!

Aztec prints: Aztec, I really, really don’t need to say more.

Cute crochet: Same as the Boho Babe style, crochet gives the Mexican trends that rural touch. I like mixing it up with prints, but you can go with the set if you like that better.

Embroidery: One of the things us Mexicans really feel proud of is embroidery. If you go to small cities or towns, you can find incredible work, made by hand, and at prices you never would’ve imagined. Swimwear with embroidered details is always prettier than any print, pattern or color you could ever wear.

BIKINI SEASON 2013: The Free Spirit

free spirit3

Good morning, my sweet readers! This is the fourth post from our Bikini Season series and on that I have learned to love and wear. I’ve never been a music festival kind of chick and I am not fond of tye-dye. But when it comes to beachwear, the Free Spirit style is as chic and effortless as it can get! It’s all about mixing and matching unexpected bikini prints, adding feathers or fringes for that bohemian touch, taking animal prints to the next level (no patterns, the digital face of that animal in all its glory), wearing cropped tops (think embroidery, think crochet, think ethnic tees) with short, short, distressed, denim cut-offs (details like studs, lace or threads make the look even more interesting). Even if you the Free Spirit trend is not your cup of tea, don’t neglect it until you try it! But first, the selection of bikinis and one-pieces you’ll need to start putting together your look. Ready?

mix match

Tie-dye: A tie-dye bikini set is definitely a must inside your closet. Both top and bottom are perfect for mixing and matching duties. Wear one or the other with a floral top or a paisley bottom.

  • River Island
  • VIX
  • Raquel Allegra
  • Khol’s

Paisley Princess: Paisley has been around always when it comes to beachwear, that’s why the perfect piece must belong in that bikini drawer of yours. Paisley looks good with solids but it also looks great with more prints and why not? With another paisley pattern!

  • Zimmermann
  • ETRO
  • Zimmermann
  • Dolce & Gabbana

Digital Print: It was a matter of time, digital prints took over the pret-a-porter world seasons ago. It was only natural that swimwear followed. Whether you go for a retro beach setting or a wild lion’s face, this style is a fun twist to your usual flower bikini.

  • Topshop
  • New Look
  • We Are Handsome

Top with a fringe: I’ve been skeptical about this style and the truth is, it’s everywhere! I have big boobs so the fear of the frill, ruffle or fringe has always been there, staring at my face. My advice for big chested girls like me? Triangle with a little fringe. If you have less boobs, wear ‘em all!

What will you need to pair up with your Free Spirit bikini of choice? Here’s a selection:

  1. Saddle bag, OrYANI
  2. Gladiators, Zara
  3. Wayfarers, Ray-Ban
  4. Crochet top, Topshop
  5. Knit shorts, Haute Hippie
  6. Tiger one-piece, We Are Handsome
  7. Scarf playsuit, Fashion Union
  8. Caged wedges, River Island
  9. Gem necklace, ASOS
  10. Nail polish duo, Chanel Le Vernis
  11. Head chain, River Island
  12. Classique Summer scent, Jean Paul Gaultier
  13. Fringe bikini top, H&M
  14. Leopard bikini bottom, River Island

And we are done for the day! I’m taking a few days off to go to my lil’ piece of beach heaven so I’ll be blogging from there!

Lots of love and sweet kisses…

Sweet n’raw’s Summer Prep: BIKINI SEASON

This is the beginning of a long series of beachwear posts and since it’s one of my favorite seasons, I’m really, really enjoying it! Ever since I started blogging, I have always payed special attention to Summer. Wanna know why? Because it’s a happy season, it’s colorful and you can go out there wearing almost nothing and it’s socially acceptable.

This is not your classic magazine, body type, bikini guide. This is not the always annoying “If you are big breasted, wear tops with more coverage” guide. Honey, I have big, natural boobs and your “more coverage” tops happen to make me look like a quarterback. This is not the “if you are curvy or pear shaped stay away of the string bikini” kind of guide. Or the infamous “If you have a muffin top, wear a tankini”. A tankini? Seriously? No one should be allowed to wear tankinis! EVER! Those guides suck, because a girl should always know what looks good on her and she should be able to wear what she wants if she likes how she looks in it.

Every body is different, that’s why I don’t believe in shape stereotypes and that’s why my guide is all about trends, textures, styles, colors and attitudes. For this first post, I’ve made a bikini chart and from tomorrow we will start learning about each and every one of the styles you can see on my chart. Ready?

bikini chart

  • Free spirit: Mixing fringes with tie-dye and leopard print? That’s the kind of risks the Free Spirit takes when it comes to swimwear and everything else. She is the master of mixing and matching. TOP: H&M BOTTOM: River Island
  • Jungle book: Prints have always been a must when it comes to bikini sets, but this season, it’s all about the jungle: plants, tropical birds, wild cats and more! BIKINI: We Are Handsome
  • Vintage rose: I’m a sucker for floral print, but when floral print gets the vintage treatment, it’s whole new level of awesomness. BIKINI: Zimmermann
  • Glam gal: We are talking Pucci and Versace, old school Versace, kind of prints, mixed with metallic and textures. TOP: Pucci BOTTOM: Versace
  • Bombshell: What would Marilyn wear nowadays for a beach day? What would a bond girl wear? Skimpy and belted pieces, for sure! BIKINI: Emilio Pucci
  • Thrill of the frill: Frills and ruffles were among the strongest trends this Spring, it’s only natural that they transitioned beautifully into bikini sets. BIKINI: Norma Kamali
  • Retro chic: You can be afraid of the high-waisted bottoms, but don’t hate them till you try them. Always pair them up with tie front tops for an even more retro air. TOP: River Island BOTTOM: Tori Praver
  • Boho babe: Mix ethnic prints, with crochet, with embroideries and you’ll always get it right. TOP: Emamó BOTTOM: Emamó
  • Charming belle: Micro florals, Lemon Vreeland, Sookie Stackhouse and grandma’s curtains, all of that in a swimsuit! TOP: NewLook BOTTOM: Zimmermann
  • Lolita: Bows, polka dots, balconette tops, boy short bottoms and of course, a pair of red heart shaped glasses. TOP: J. Crew BOTTOM: NewLook
  • Pastel pretty: I’m a sucker for powdery shades but hear me out, pastel shades against a perfect tan is a killer look. TOP: Carine Gilson BOTTOM: J.Crew
  • The mermaid: You need a teal bottom with a shimmery finish and a structured, blush, scalloped bra. Very Ariel from The Little Mermaid and perfect for a poolside. TOP: Topshop BOTTOM: Vix
  • Vitamin: Barbie pink and bright orange are great for swimwear, they look amazing with a tan and they are bound to get some heads turning your way! TOP: Herve Leger BOTTOM: Melissa Odabash
  • Bejeweled: Think sapphires, emeralds, amethysts, all in a shimmery and silky finish! TOP: Vix BOTTOM: Olga Olsson
  • Hello tan lines: Straps across the tummy or multi-string bottoms, they are a gamble but they sure look great! BIKINI: Agent Provocateur
  • Mexican delight: To my delight (I am a proud Mexican) Aztec and folk prints and textures are all over for Summer 2013. Embrace the sarape stripes! TOP & BOTTOM: River Island
  • Wild thing: Choose your poison: leopard, cheetah, tiger, python and wear those two little pieces of clothing with pride and attitude. Wanna make it bolder? Mix the prints! TOP: Carlotta Vulcano BOTTOM: Melissa Odabash
  • Sporty: Another one of the season’s biggest trends gets the beachwear treatment. BIKINI: Lisa Marie Fernandez
  • In the navy: Sailor stripes? A classic that never gets boring! BIKINI: J.Crew
  • Dark & Dangerous: A little black bikini is like the little black dress, a must in your closet! BIKINI: River Island.

That’s a wrap for today! Tomorrow we are starting with the first of the styles, so stay tuned!

Sweet kisses…

spring 96

Spring has definitely Sprung! Trees are growing their leaves, flowers are blooming, my coats and boots are stored in boxes and my feet are pedicure ready for sandals and barely there heels. Prior to Sweet n’raw’s Fashion Week special, we began covering this season’s strongest trends: Emerald, the Beetlejuice stripes, the palate cleansers, the floral prints and more. But there’s one thing about trends, no everyone likes to follow them and they don’t suit everyone who attempts to wear them. That’s why I have made my grocery list (Ok, ok! Shopping list… if only grocery shopping was that fun), packed with all the items that one must own this Spring and Summer and classified into colors, patterns and prints and even occasions. Over the next few days, I will be showing you two parts of the list in one post (I don’t want to bore the socks out of you with endless images and texts that resemble a puberty diary) and then we will be moving on to another section: How to wear our recently purchased “groceries”. So get your note pad and star scribbling, and then the fun part, start crossing out the items you already have or have just bought! Ready?

Prints and patterns are the best way to give that basic pair of pants the ultimate twist or to spice up an entire ensemble. This Spring, they are getting bolder and more fun than ever. Here’s the items you simply must have in your closet:

  1. The statement wedges: Whether you go for patterns, graphic or fabric prints, a flashy wedge sandal is a must this Spring. Charlotte Olympia and Zara have a great selection, but this Sergio Rossi pair took my breath away.
  2. Volume + stripes: Skirts with some structure always come in handy when creating playful looks, add some stripes (one of the biggest trends this season) and you have a winner. Skirt is from MSGM.
  3. Peplum with a twist: Last Fall, the peplum was everywhere! This Spring, it stuck around but with a new twist: colorful printed and textured. This fierce little number is from Preen.
  4. Tribal clutch: We all know and probably own tribal skirts and mini shorts, but how about some tribal arm candy? Zara has a bunch of options, including the one in the picture.
  5. Bold and flat: Long, pointy and flat is the new ballerina. Don’t discard them until you try them. This printed pair is from Zara.
  6. Head-turning trainers: Isabel Marant set them loose and we have loved and worshipped high-tops ever since then. Leave it to Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci to put some silk and prints into the already lovely equation.
  7. Wild jacquard: I have to blame Jenna Lyons for my jacquard pants obsession and thank the rest of the designers who followed. This Spring is not only about printed pants, it’s also about the texture. Pants, Kenzo.
  8. Show-stopping shift: With the digital print revolution, you don’t need to spend $3,000 on a Mary Katrantzou or Peter Pilotto (pictured) dress. A shift with a bold pattern is a life savior when the heat is unbearable: you’ll look cute and put together, but you’ll feel comfy and fresh.
  9. Pattern knits: Fall gave us graphic jumpers, Spring is giving us patterned ones. Ideal for when creating texture and print mash-ups. Jonathan Saunders (pictured) has a great selection.
  10. Shorty and spotty: A major staple and one that I can guarantee you’ll use over and over are a pair of leopard shorts.
  11. Red bright lips: It’s all about a bright, almost orange pucker this Spring.
  12. Colorful crochet: Bold colors and Missoni? What’s not to love?

love notesRomantic pieces are not only pretty but also useful. You can get playful with them, pair them up with unexpected pieces: a biker jacket perhaps, or some hardcore boots on a lacey dress. You can put together a girly and ladylike ensemble. This season you will need the following:

  1. Pastel wedges: Pink, powder blue, minty or lavender, you choose! Stella McCartney is responsible for this darling babies.
  2. Retro sunnies: Think ladies of Mad Men, maybe Jackie O if she is more your style. Stella is also responsible for this pair.
  3. Firty skirt: flouncy with volume and in a pretty color and fabric. It’s not only for dressing up but can also be worn off-duty with a sheer tank or a tee. This pink number is from Miu Miu.
  4. Ruffle top: Chloe did ruffles, so did Gucci and Balenciaga. And since the white Chloe shift is almost unreachable, a romantic ruffled blouse is the perfect substitute. Blouse, Chloe
  5. Vivid bikini: Zimmermann has the best shapes when it comes to swimwear, but also the best prints. They make the most vivid and romantic, almost retro floral prints and you, my friend, need to own one of their bikinis.
  6. Princess flats: I assume you already have your mirrored heels, but you definitely need your glittery and sparkly pair of flats. Perfect fo when you want to add a touch of bling to an off-duty look or when you want to ditch the heels for an evening and still look picture perfect.
  7. Floral pants: Choose your style: harem, tapered, skinny, capri or wide. This come from the extraordinary mind of J. Crew’s Jenna Lyons.
  8. Creamy & lacy: A dress, no matter the length or shape, no matter the sleeves or the neckline, in creamy lace will always come in handy when it comes to sunny weather. This piece of art is from Jesus del Pozo.
  9. The pretty clutch: Pretty colors and heavy embellishment make this kind of bag the perfect companion for an important event or a fancy dinner. Purse, Lanvin
  10. Cutie pie jumper: Last Fall, Graphic knits were all about mad dogs, growling tigers, fierce eagles. This Spring is all about deers, pretty birds, cute cats and darling doggies.
  11. Floral shorts: I don’t need to say anything more, you should know by now that this are a must. Peter Som makes this pink pair.
  12. Afternoon tea heels: I have named them that way for a reason: Think about the kind of shoes you would wear if invited to an afternoon tea party in a garden. Ankle straps, printed fabric, girly details. You can find this pair on Zara.

There you go, from the bold to the lovely. Are this items already inside your closet? If not, start looking! On tomorrow’s post I will give you the on duty and off-duty items, don’t miss it!

Sweet kisses…
